Horry Group Works To Repeal New State Education Standards

— Some Horry County residents who want to repeal the state’s adoption of new standards for S.C. schools have organized a group to educate people about the Common Core initiative and stop the changes that already have begun.
The group, a chapter of S.C. Parents Involved in Education, believes the new standards will not provide the right education for the state’s students, said group leader Camille Noonan. The new math standards don’t teach the basics, classic literature will be dropped in favor of nonfiction texts, and the education of area students will be determined at the national level, she said.
